Our Directors ~

In 1978 Barbara joined Island Hills. By October of that year, she was on her way to LA and her first SAI competition where she became part of IHC’s iconic win! That same year, Laura was singing baritone with the Junior Jills, a high school quartet named after the Island Jills, an IHC member quartet. It’s possible that both Barbara and Laura were at a rehearsal in the Sweet Hollow Hall together, they just didn’t know each other yet.

Fast forward to 1994 when Laura joined Island Hills. Barbara was her baritone section leader. They hit it off, and it was not long before Laura switched to tenor so they could sing together and compete in a quartet. They performed in Rhythm & Rhyme, winning the Novice Quartet contest, and later in Savoir Faire, placing fourth at the regional contest. They graced the contest stage together nine times.
Over the past 26 years, Barbara and Laura have been the closest of friends, supporting each other in every way. They find their greatest joy in collaborating and have entertained audiences in our shows as a duo, (oh, their rendition of “Sisters”!) and most recently with their quartet, It’s All Relative!
Fast forward to the pandemic. Our dynamic duo decided to step in to keep the chorus moving forward. After six months of planning and zooming (and zooming and planning), the chorus voted to make their status official.
We are pleased to announce that Barbara Festa and Laura Riffaud are the new directors of Island Hills!
