Newsday Article "Island Hills Chorus reunites after pandemic pause"

The “Hills“ Are Alive With The Sound of Music

Island Hills Chorus spent Monday March 4, 2019 singing at an event at the United Nations called Artfully Yours which was an exhibit/fundraiser for various charities. Rapt with anticipation, our intrepid band of singers primped and primed ourselves for a fun night in Manhattan. There was almost no traffic into the city so we arrived with enough time to stop in at Veniero’s Pasticceria and Cafe on East 11th.  We regaled the patrons and staff with “New York, New York” and “For Once in My Life”. What a fabulous way to calm our nerves and get charged up. The weather was clear and cold but our hearts were warm and our hopes were high.

So much history, such elegant surroundings, gracious dignitaries dressed to the nines, from the replica of the original Sputnik donated by Russia to the gold and agate diorama of a desert oasis— this was a wondrous venue.

We had a staging area with a great view of the East River at twilight.  Then we were directed to the performance area where we were introduced by our genial hosts at the opening of the event.  Memorable addresses regarding the charities being honored enriched the evening. We were then moved to center stage to complete our show.

Island HIlls Chorus Director at the time,Tom Brucia, led us through our repertoire and several encore songs.  After our portion of the evening, we joined the dignitaries and guests for cocktails and finger food.  Thank you so much, Maria Kerins, for including us in your Artfully Yours exhibit/fundraiser at the United Nations for the benefit of Triple Negative Breast Cancer Foundation and the Foundation for Hope and Health Haiti. What a memorable night!

The members of Island Hills Chorus are still riding high from winning their third-place medal in the Sweet Adelines International regional competition recently. IHC is a fun bunch of ladies who love to sing. Fresh from a well-received concert at the Chaplin Rainbow Stage in Huntington, we dove into rehearsals for our annual fund-raising Showcase, this year it was an original play-within-a-play called Heartland.
But as a new member, the stand-out highlight for me was our opening for the New York City  Rockettes’ Christmas Show at Radio City Music Hall this past winter. Bragging rights for life!
Under the insightful direction of Tom Brucia we have grown in scale and scope. Mentorship efforts by our team leaders have made learning IHC’s  repertoire fun and achievable.
Opportunities abound for creative interaction. Members submit scripts for review, and one is chosen as our showcase event. New singers pair up with veterans to form quartets who perform with Island Hills Chorus and also arrange their own bookings, compete for medals and write parodies.
Regional Workshops and private coaching sessions have been so enlightening, fulfilling and fun. I can’t wait to see what they offer at this autumn’s VocalFest!
Membership is always open and drop-in guests are welcome. So if you’d like to keep your mind sharp with music, hope to make new friends, or just need to get out of the house on Thursdays 7-10pm, join Island Hills Chorus at the Central Islip Recreation Center, 555 Clayton St, Central Islip, NY 11722
Come for an evening... Stay for a lifetime.
